JACKSON, NJ – Six Flags Great Adventure, home to some of the world’s most thrilling roller coasters, has officially announced the closure of Kingda Ka, the record-breaking coaster that has been a centerpiece of the park since its debut in 2005. Alongside Kingda Ka, several other rides, including Green Lantern, Twister, Parachutes, and the Sky Way, will also be retired as part of a multi-year expansion plan.
A Roller Coaster Legacy Comes to an End
Known for its jaw-dropping height of 456 feet and incredible launch speed of 128 mph, Kingda Ka has thrilled over 12 million riders since it opened. Park visitors flocked to the ride for a final adrenaline rush after rumors of its closure began circulating last weekend. On Thursday, Six Flags confirmed the news, marking the end of an era for one of the park’s most iconic attractions.
Investing in the Future
Despite the closures, Six Flags is looking ahead, with plans to invest more than $1 billion into its parks over the next two years. The transformation includes two new cutting-edge roller coasters and enhancements across the property.
The first new ride, The Flash: Vertical Velocity, will debut in 2025 as North America’s first super boomerang coaster, promising a unique thrill for adrenaline enthusiasts. The second, slated for 2026, will be a multi-world-record-breaking launch coaster constructed in the space formerly occupied by Kingda Ka and Green Lantern.
A Vision for Unforgettable Experiences
Six Flags Great Adventure President Brian Bacica expressed excitement about the park's future.
"We understand that saying goodbye to beloved rides can be difficult, and we appreciate our guests’ passion," Bacica said. "These changes are an important part of our growth and dedication to delivering exceptional new experiences. The park’s multi-year expansion plans will bring record-breaking thrill rides, revitalized family experiences, elevated dining, and expanded events."
A New Era for Six Flags
While the closure of cherished rides like Kingda Ka and the Sky Way may be bittersweet for longtime fans, Six Flags’ ambitious investment signals a bold new chapter. The upcoming attractions aim to cement the park’s reputation as a premier destination for thrill-seekers and families alike.
Visitors can look forward to a revitalized Six Flags Great Adventure that blends nostalgia with innovative, next-generation experiences.
